School officials looking at future of former Ironton pool

The old municipal pool may not be all dried up after all.

Ironton City Schools officials are looking into whether the old pool can be fixed and if there is any funding out there to pay for whatever needs to be done. The pool was deeded back to the school district earlier this year.

Superintendent Dean Nance said Monday evening he has contacted M&S Services of Bluefield, W.Va., and has asked that business to give an estimate of what it would charge to conduct and evaluation of condition of the pool.

Along those same lines, Ironton City Schools officials and Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization officials are looking for funding to pay for the project.

"We need to determine what the problems are and then see if we can come up with funding," CAO Assistant Director Ralph Kline said. "It depends on the size of the project what kind of money we need to try to get. This money would be for rehabilitation, but cannot be used for maintenance."

Kline said one possible source of funding is the Community Development Block Grant program.

Some area civic organizations have offered their help in reopening the pool.

The Moose Lodge has already given $1,000. Nance said the Friends of Ironton and the American Legion have also expressed an interest in helping.

Nance said the city school district would not operate the pool but try to find some other entity to do that - if it's feasible and cost-effective to repair in the first place.
