UPPER TOWNSHIP - An Ironton woman is in jail today, charged in connection with the shooting of her husband Wednesday evening.

Karen Lewis-Holroyd, 36, 522 Hawk St., Ironton, is charged with felonious assault. Robert Holroyd, 51, is in intensive care at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Lawrence County Sheriff Tim Sexton said he sustained one "severe gunshot wound to the chest" by a .22 revolver that was recovered during the investigation.

"The motive we consider to be domestic related," Sexton said. "During the early part of the investigation, I felt we were being led to believe the shooting was accidental. But our contention is now that this was an intentional act."

The shooting took place at a residence on Township Road 290, off Coryville Road.

Sexton said his office received notification of the shooting between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Wednesday evening from hospital employees who said a shooting victim had been brought there for treatment.

"She drove him to the hospital, according to the information we have," Sexton said.

Lewis-Holroyd is expected to appear in Ironton Municipal Court for arraignment Monday afternoon.
