COAL GROVE - With a huge field of cars in the pits last Friday, the races had to be called for the second time in a row because of a power outage. However, all but a few of the cars were back on Saturday night to do battle for the big money races.
After three no starts because of spins, the fourth attempted start of the 30-lap modified A-main went green flag racing as polesitter David McWilliams took the lead into turns one and two.
Todd Robinson tucked in behind him in second while Eddie Harmon settled into third.
McWilliams continued with the lead while seventh place starter Tommy Moore was the car on the move as he took the fourth position on lap four.
Behind him the field would go two and three wide with one of the best battles on track being between eighth place starter Bo Cox and Roger Wireman as they battled for the fifth position on lap five.
With McWilliams leading Robinson by a few car lengths, the battle in the top five became fierce between Moore, Harmon and Cox.
The three battled two and three wide, racing hard for the position. On lap 9, Moore finally moved up to take the third position as Cox and Harmon continued their battle for fourth. The battle continued until Cox cleared Harmon on lap 12.
The race raged on with tons of side-by-side racing and passing until the caution flag waved on lap 20.
On the restart, Cox and Harmon again went side-by-side for third as McWilliams continued to lead Robinson. Harmon got by Cox a few laps later on lap 22. Harmon would go side-by-side for second with Todd Robinson. The two battled hard as Robinson still held the second position.
Meanwhile, the best battle on the track was between Adam Jordan, Joey Back and Doug Adkins as they battled two and three wide, racing extremely hard for the fifth position.
Now, with two laps to go, McWilliams with a steady lead, Robinson and Harmon would battle for second. Coming to the checkered flag, McWilliams would come across the line and win the Accent Health Care Twin 30s, impressively leading every lap to take his eighth win on the season at Rocky Top and the $1,500 dollar prize.
McWilliams, excited about his win, did victory donuts on the frontstretch.
Robinson beat out Harmon in a close finish at the checkers to take the second position with Harmon in third. Cox finished fourth while
Jordan beat out Back and Adkins for fifth as they would all be three-wide at the line.
McWilliams won the $100 Robinson Rebuilds dash while Moore, Back, and Cox won heat races. Eric Hatfield won the B-main.
In the PBM Performance Late Model A-Main, Wade Benjamin and Bob McKenzie would be involved in a hard crash at the start. On the second attempted start, Nick Bocook and Kenny Christy would go side by side for the lead on lap one down the backstretch. The two would continue side by side in turns three and four as Christy would take the lead coming to the line to complete lap one.
Going into turn one, Dennis Little and Nick Bocook would make contact racing for second as Bocook would spin. Several cars were collected in the crash including Carl Jobe. Little was charged with the caution while Bocook pulled off and Jobe continued.
On the restart, Christy would continue with the lead while Joe Ramey and Bill Bocook would battle side by side for second. Battling side by side for the position coming out of turn two, the two would make contact with Ramey going hard into the backstretch wall. Ramey was ok but was done for the evening. Bill Bocook was charged with the caution.
At the restart, Christy would lead while Phil Cox would settle into the second position. On lap seven, with Christy leading big, a huge battle would insue behind him with about 6 cars all bunched up together, battling two and three wide, with Bill Bocook and Dennis Little, making their way up through the field, right in the middle of the battle.
Bocook would move all the way up to second while Little moved up to fifth. The intense battle would continue until the caution would come out on lap 11 as a tough break occured for Dustin Casdorph who was having a top five run going.
On the restart, Christy continued with the lead while Bocook followed close behind in second. The caution flag would wave again with now three laps to go. On the restart, Bill Bocook would get to the inside of Christy as they would battle side by side for the lead. Into turns three and four, Christy would get a little loose as Bocook would get by and take the lead at the line with two laps to go.
Christy would get a run back going though as he would look now to the inside of Bocook as they would go side by side into turn three. They would remain side by side at the line to take the white flag.
Into turns one and two, Bocook, up high, would slip a little and allow Christy to clear him for the lead. In turns three and four, Bocook would come back with a little run down low but would only get to Christy's rear bumper as Kenny Christy came across the line to win his seventh race of the season and fourth in a row at Rocky Top. Bocook would get second while Dennis Little finished third, Brandon Queen fourth, and Phil Cox fifth. Christy and Joe Ramey won heat races.
In the Accent Health Care 15 for the Limited Late Models, 2004 track champion John Melvin dominated to take his first win of the season at Rocky Top. Kenny Christy finished second while Jamie Roush finished third, Steve Dillow fourth, and Myron Shaffer in fifth. Melvin also won the heat race.
At the start of the Accent Health Care Bomber A-Main, Jeremie Bretz would take the lead into turns one and two. Behind Bretz, the battle would rage two and even three wide between Jim Lemaster, Conard Newman, and Brett Carey for the second position.
Newman would clear both Lemaster and Carey and set his sights on Bretz. The following lap, Newman would look to the inside of Bretz and go side by side with him for the lead. The two would battle side by side for a few laps but nobody would have anything for Bretz as he went on to take his sixth win of the season at Rocky Top and the $500 prize. Jim Lemaster got by Newman to finish second with Newman third, Brett Carey fourth, and Davey Dunn fifth.
