CHESHIRE - The Fairland Dragons stepped up while Chuck Wentz ran up.

Fairland finished third overall in the River Valley Invitational cross country meet Saturday and Wentz led the way as he tied the meet record.

The Dragons had 88 points to finish behind Wheelersburg with 25 points and host River Valley with 44.

Wentz led the way with a 14:20 time.

"Our boys stepped it up. They've been doing a very good job. I'm proud of our boys placing third with only seven boys running," Fairland coach Chuck Wentz said.

"Chuck ran an outstanding race tying the meet record. And our girls haven't been out long but they're improving."

The meet record was previously set by Chris Roush of River Valley who is now a member of the Shawnee State cross country team.

Chris Dirling of Coal Grove was 13th with a 15:49 clocking and Adam Slone of Chesapeake was 14th with a time of 15:54.

Brian King was the only other Fairland runner among the top 20 as he placed 20th with a 16:26 time.

Fairland's next meet is Saturday at Cabell Midland. The Dragons host their invitational Sept. 13.

Ironton runs at Gallipolis on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
