Two South Point residents arrested on drug charges were among those arraigned Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Through his attorney, D.L. McWhorter, LeShawn Nickelson, 33, of 403 Fourth St. East, entered a plea of not guilty to the 10 felony drug charges involving the trafficking of crack cocaine.

"These are serious charges," Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Frank McCown told Nickelson. "You're looking at conceivably spending the rest of your life in the penitentiary."

McCown set bond at $50,000.

"This is due to the nature of the indictment and the numerous counts against him," Assistant Lawrence County Prosecutor Brigham Anderson said.

McWhorter countered that Nickelson is a Lawrence County resident who has shown up for court appointments thus far so a more reasonable bond was in order.

"He is seeking substance abuse treatment at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital," McWhorter said.

A pretrial is scheduled for Wednesday.

Nickelson's cohort, Cynthia Cranston, 32, also of 403 Fourth St. East, was arraigned before Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Richard Walton.

Through a substitute attorney, David Reid Dillon, Cranston entered a plea of not guilty to two felony charges: Second-degree complicity to drug abuse and fifth-degree permitting drug abuse. The $50,000 cash bond ordered in Lawrence County Court was continued to Common Pleas Court.

Walton set a Sept. 21 pretrial conference.

Also arraigned Wednesday in Common Pleas Court: Cyril Derrico, also known as Raymond Triplett, 33, of 1043 Township Road 1725, Proctorville. Derrico is charged with fourth-degree felony theft and first-degree misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He is accused of going to an eastern Lawrence County business to steal items and taking a child along to witness the event.

McCown set bond at $5,000 cash and scheduled a Sept. 28 pretrial conference.

Also Wednesday, William Freeman, 28, of 5522 State Route 217, Willow Wood, was arraigned on six counts of not paying child support.

Three of the charges are fifth-degree felonies; the other three are first-degree misdemeanors. Walton set a $25,000 own recognizance bond and scheduled a Sept. 21 pretrial conference.
