When residents need a little extra cash, they now have another place to turn.
Since the beginning of the month, Payday Express, at 402 Park Ave. in Ironton, has been giving customers a little extra cash to get through the tight times.
"It can be useful for many different things, if your car breaks down or if your rent is due or something and you don't have it that week you can borrow the money to pay your rent, then when you get your paycheck come in and pay us back," manager Sheena Wiseman said.
Those interested in taking advantage of Payday Express' services need only a current bank statement, proof of income and an ID. If the loan is approved, a surcharge of $15 for every $100 loaned is applied.
A check for that amount is written to Payday Express who holds on to it, and hands over the cash. When payday rolls around again, the loan is repaid (plus the charge) and the customer's check is returned to them.
Although typically Payday Express will loan money for two weeks, new customers can get a three-week loan.
The business is new in Ironton, but they're not first-timers. There are also Payday Express branches in Chesapeake and Proctorville, and a couple more in Scioto County.
Payday Express' Ironton location opened on Sept. 1, and so far the going has been slow. But Wiseman said she suspects that once customers find out more about the service things will pick up.
"We've maybe had five customers since we opened," Wiseman said. "I think it has a lot to do with it that they are just not sure what it really is."
In addition to loaning money, the shop also provides copy and faxing services.
