CHESAPEAKE - The Wayne Pioneers are off and "Roland."

Garry Roland ran 15 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns as the Wayne Pioneers won their fifth straight over the Chesapeake Panthers Friday night, 44-6.

Wayne (2-0) had 378 yards offensivel but struggled against the Panthers defense in the first half.

"I give Roland a lot credit. He got rolling in the second half. He's a good player," Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

Chesapeake was its own worst enemy with five turnovers including three interceptions.

"We snapped the ball over punter's head twice. It was 12-0 and should have been 0-0 at the half," Davis said. "The defense played great. You can't give Wayne the ball on the 30."

A 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by Dana Lycans put Wayne up 6-0 in the first quarter.

Chesapeake then drove to the 15-yard line but the drive stalled. After holding Wayne, the Panthers stalled again only to have a bad snap on the punt.

The miscue set up a 1-yard scoring run by Daniel Runyon on the first play of the second quarter that extended the lead to 12-0 at the half.

Roland punched in a 5-yard scoring run to start the third quarter and then ripped off a 41-yard gallop for another touchdown that pushed the lead to 25-0.

"When they got their third score they got rolling on us and they're a good team," Davis said. "I was proud of the effort. Our kids played with them early. (Coach) Larry (Morgan) did a nice."

Chesapeake got on the scoreboard before the end of the quarter.

Quarterback Caleb McComas, who was forced to throw with the Panthers behind, connected for all four of his completions in a 49-yard drive capped with a 23-yard toss to Jeffrey Thornburg that made it 25-6.

But Wayne answered with its own 49-yard drive that culminated with a 14-yard Roland run and it was 32-6.

The Pioneers got a couple of late runs by Rodney Endicott and Travis Thompson against the Chesapeake reserves to close out the scoring.

Chesapeake fell to 0-2 for the fifth straight season. The Panthers have managed to rebound in three of the past four years to make the playoffs despite the rough start.
