SOUTH POINT - If Friday night's Ohio Valley Conference game against the Coal Grove Hornets was a class, the South Point Pointers passed with high marks.
Taking instruction from their coaches and putting it into their offense and defense, the Pointers won a 27-26 overtime thriller Friday of the Coal Grove Hornets.
“They're learning how to win football games,” Pointers coach Dan McDavid said. “Everyone contributed. It was a great win.”
South Point (5-4, 2-2) can post a winning season with a victory at Fairland next week.
The loss ruined any hopes for Coal Grove toward winning a share of the Ohio Valley Conference title or making the Division IV playoffs. However, the Hornets could stand in the way of Rock Hill winning the league outright or toward making the playoffs when the two teams meet next Friday.
Rocky Roe had 176 all-purpose yards as he rushed for 77 yards on nine carries, caught one pass for 24 yards and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
South Point had 276 total yards, 162 on the ground and 114 through the air as quarterback Chris Smith was 6 of 12 for 114 yards an an interception.
“Our offensive line did a super job. Rusty Gillispie and Adam Stewart did a great job,” McDavid said.
Justin Hyland had another big game for the Hornets (6-3, 2-2 OVC) as he carried 46 times for 224 yards. Chris Chaffin added 77 yards on nine attempts.
“Hyland just keeps on plugging, but we played a great game against them defensively,” McDavid said.
South Point took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on an 11-yard run by John Crager.
But Hyland's 3-yard run with 2:19 left in the half along with his conversion run gave Coal Grove an 8-6 lead.
Roe returned the second half kickoff 75 yards for t touchdown as South Point tied the game.
Coal Grove came right back with a long scoring drive capped by Hyland's 6-yard run that tied the game again.
A 1-yard run by Smith put the Pointers ahead with11 minutes to play in regulation, but Hyland's 3-yard touchdown run tieh 1:51 to play tie the score.
However, Anthony Ross tackled Hyland on the conversion to keep the scored 20-20.
“Our linebackers Cory Garred and John Crager did a nice job, and Ross and (Jude) Crabtree and (Beau) Weed had very good ballgames. It was a very good team win. We played good for four quarters,” said McDavid.
In overtime, Hyland carried five straight times including the final 4 yards for a touchdown to pu Coal Grove ahead 26-20. But again he was stopped on the conversion.
The Pointers tied the game on their turn when Jacob Orlando ran 15 yards for the touchdown. Freshman Jacob Seagraves kicked the extra point to give South Point the win.
