SCIOTO COUNTY- A Portsmouth woman was arrested Wednesday, charged in connection with the discovery of a baby's body that was found earlier this week in the back yard of a Dutch Ridge Road residence.

Sarah Halcomb, 21, was charged with abuse of a corpse, a fifth-degree felony. Lawrence County Sheriff Marty Donini said the autopsy and Halcomb both indicate the baby was stillborn. The arrest came after an anonymous tip telephoned into the Scioto County Sheriff's Office indicated Halcomb could have been the mother of the infant. Authorities contacted the woman, who agreed to meet with a detective at a &#8220park and ride” lot at the intersection of State Route 140 and Ohio River Road. At that time, Donini said Halcomb confessed to giving birth to the child alone at her residence and then disposing of the body a couple days later.

Halcomb was taken to the Scioto County Jail. In addition to the charge she faces in connection with the discovery of the child's body, she is also facing a bench warrant that was issued after she failed to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on five counts of forgery, two counts of receiving stolen property and one count of theft.
