Organizers hope for a serene and spiritual nod to the holidays.
The annual Lawrence County Historical Society Candlelight Christmas Walking Tour of churches is slated for 5 p.m. Saturday.
As many as 200 people are expected to attend this year's event. More than 100 people took part last year. For many, the church tour is a not-to-be-missed part of the holiday season.
“It's a bit of history,” church walk committee member Debbie Rogers said. “These churches are some of the oldest in town, some of our founding fathers had ties to these churches. Also, they have such beautiful architecture that you just don't see in new buildings.”
The theme for this year's event will be “The Coming of Our King.” Churches will present 10-minute programs based on that theme.
The tour begins at First Baptist Church at Fifth and Vernon streets and continues to Christ Episcopal Church at Fifth Street and Park Avenue, First United Methodist Church at Fifth and Center streets.
The next stops are First Presbyterian Church at Fifth and Railroad streets, St. Paul Lutheran Church at Sixth and Center streets, St. Lawrence O'Toole at Sixth and Center streets.
Then comes Gateway Baptist Church at Sixth and Vernon streets and Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at Eighth and Adams streets.
It has been several years since Quinn Chapel has taken part in the church walk.
“They were part of the church walk when it was first started,” Rogers said.
“We're glad to have them be a part of it again.”
The paths between the churches will be lit by candles and live music will serenade tour participants along the way. Those who take part are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight.
After the Quinn Chapel program, attendees are invited to the museum for punch and cookies.
