PEDRO - The St. Joseph Flyers did the right things at the right

time.

After building a big lead over the first three quarters, the Flyers held on to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 46-42 Saturday.

&#8220We didn't shoot real well, but we made the shots when we had to and we played good defense. Clay Crum did a good job on their point guard,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said. &#8220And then we cleaned the glass (rebounded).”

The Flyers (2-0) were led by Cory Lewis with 18 points including two clutch foul shots down the stretch.

Alex Swarts, who sat out most of the first half in foul trouble, finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Staton had eight points and seven rebounds.

Rock Hill was playing its opening game without leading scorer K.C. Christian who missed the game due to an injury.

Mark DePriest had 13 points and Nathan Davenport added 10 points.

Lewis and Swarts combined for seven points as St. Joseph took an 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Rock Hill managed to outscore the Flyers 8-7 in the second quarter and trailed 18-11 at the break.

Lewis got hot and scored 10 points in the third quarter as St. Joseph opened up a 32-20 lead head. Davenport scored six points to keep the Redmen in striking distance.

Rock Hill's Mark DePriest took over and scored eight points and Davenport was 4-of-4 from the foul line as the Redmen outscored the Flyers 22-14 in the quarter.

But the Flyers were able to sink 4-of-5 from the line - Lewis and Crum made two each - to preserve the win. Swarts scored six of his points in the final quarter.
