Derek R. Daniels spent his first day as an adult in an adult jail, likely wondering if he will face adult charges.

Daniels, 18, of 1917 S. Third St., Ironton, is in the Lawrence County Jail today, charged in connection with an overnight shooting in the 700 block of South Eighth Street.

Carey said although Daniels was 17 years old when the alleged shooting took place, he turned 18 at midnight and was taken to jail and booked in as an adult, charged with falsification and obstruction of justice at this time.

“We’ll file a report with the (Lawrence County) Prosecutor’s Office and they will make a determination whether to charge him as an adult and what other additional charges there will be,” said Ironton Police Detective Capt. Jim Carey.

Carey said a man called authorities just before 9 p.m. Sunday and said someone had shot at his car while he was in the 700 block of South Eighth Street.

The driver of the car told authorities he had been in Ironton to meet with a couple of other people and the meeting turned sour.

“One guy had a gun and he put it to the driver’s head and tried to order him out of the car and the driver just took off,” Carey said. “As he was leaving three shots were fired into the car.”

One person in that car suffered superficial wounds to his leg when one of those bullets bounced off the car and grazed his leg. Carey said the driver and the suspect knew each other. He declined, at this time, to discuss a motive for the shooting.

A juvenile with Daniels at the time of the shooting was released to his family and does not face any charges in connection with the incident.
