Logan uses depth to win Ironton meet

Size does matter when it comes to depth, and depth was the difference for the Logan Chieftains.
Logan won only three events, but the Division I school used its depth to edge another Division I school, Watkins Memorial, Saturday to win the 53rd Ironton Invitational.
Loganhad 131 points with Watkins getting 110 points. South Point was third with 76 followed by Wheelersburg with 64, Fairland 60, Chesapeake and South Webster 54, Ironton 42, Rock Hill 37 and Gallipolis 29.
“Logan didn’t win a lot of events, but they had two people score in about every event. They just have so much depth,” Ironton coach Greg Cronacher said.
Cronacher was happy with his team’s performance, especially with runners being limited to the number of events they were entered.
The 4×800 relay finished second with an impressive time of 8:49.0 behind the combined efforts of Brandon Walker, Tym Vandermosten, Eric Edens and Marc Carter.
Carter was impressive as he won the 800 meter run with a 2:05.4 clocking.
“Marc Carter had a very good day. He ran well,” Cronacher said. “We had some guys out and we only let some of them run one or two events. It’s early, so we’ll get better as the season goes along. We’ve got a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.”
Carter was on the 4×400 relay team along with Craig Stamper, Walker and freshman Major Brice that was fourth despite dropping the baton.
Freshman Lukas Morris was fourth in the high jump and eighth in the long jump. Edens, another freshman, was sixth in the 1600.
Ironton’s John Paul Pemberton took fourth in the shot put and discus.
South Point’s Chris Smith had another big meet. Smith won the discus with a toss of 151-6 and was edged out in the shot put by Logan’s Bryce Bumgardner who threw 55-4.75. Smith had a heave of 54-8.
“Our pole vaulter is out with a broken hand and he should be back this week, and we didn’t have Benji Smith today. He should be back and that will help us,” Pointers coach Randy Smith said.
Chesapeake’s Brent Ransbottom, the Division III state runner-up last season, set a new meet record with a high jump of 6-9. He broke the old mark of 6-6 set by Portsmouth Notre Dame’s Tommy Bowman in 1980.
The Panthers Kenny Morgan was second in the 100 meter dash. Rock Hill’s Jason Massie was second in the 200 and fourth in the 100.
The Chesapeake Lions Club Invitational will be Friday.
