Redmen want to build around strong offense

PEDRO — P.O.D. is not Problems of Democracy for the Rock Hill Redmen. It’s the three key elements to a good baseball season.
The Redmen are having no problem passing the “O” or offensive end of the game, but coach Barry Litteral is focusing his concerns on “P” for pitching and “D” for defense.
“We’re very capable of scoring runs,” Litteral said. “If we can continue throwing strikes and playing defense, we can be competitive.
“We have a lot of seniors with experience. We have a lot back and a lot of leadership qualities. We have a lot of versatility. We can moved some people around, especially when pitching someone. We just have to be strong defensively.”
Opening the season with two wins, the Redmen have made just one error. But pitching will help determine how well the defense plays. Litteral is looking to seniors Josh Moore and Michael Williams as the top two arms on the staff but expects several other players to contribute including K.C. Christian, Josh Guy and J.C. Murnahan.
“Moore and Williams will throw strikes. Guy can throw some for us and Murnahan can give us some innings. We need to have two or three guys who can do that,” Litteral said.
Moore will be back in right field with Murnahan in center field and Nick Howard in left. Guy and Danny Carmon are also candidates.
“We have a lot of speed in the outfield and the can cover a lot of ground and they all have strong arms,” Litteral said.
The infield will be solid and experienced.
Carl Blankenship takes over at first base with Williams at second base, T.J. Blagg at shortstop and Mark Anderson at third. Nick Bryant will fill in depending on who is pitching.
Murnahan is back behind the plate and Guy will fill his spot when Murnahan pitches.
“The infield is pretty solid. We improved defensively. The kids worked hard in the offseason,” Litteral said. “Murnahan has a nice strong and very accurate arm.”
In the Ohio Valley Conference race, Litteral pointed toward South Point but said “the league is more balanced. It may come down to the team that stays hot and plays the most consistent.”
