Ryan Waginger and Ryan Schwab got the St. Joseph Flyers back in the game, then they took the Oak Hill Oaks out of it.

Waginger and Schwab combined for five hits including a pair of home runs as the Flyers pounded the Oaks 18-8 Thursday.

Schwab was 3-4 and Waginger 2-4 plus a double as the Flyers improved to 2-1.

“We hit the ball well. We got behind and came back,” Flyers coach Greg Bryant said. “Schwab came in and threw strikes and kept us in the game. He had some big hits. Ryan Waginger had two big hits. His home run put the game out of reach.”

Oak Hill jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, but St. Joseph came back with seven runs of its own in each the second inning and nine in the third.

In the second, Chad Harvey and Michael Basedow singled and Waginger doubled them home. Jeremy Addis had an RBI single, took second base on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Schwab’s base.

Alex Swarts singled in a run and Jerrod Laber walked to load the bases. Pat Gagai, Harvey and Basedow all walked to force in runs.

In the third inning, Schwab was safe on an error and Caleb Blackburn singled with Schwab running on the pitch and scored from first base. Laber singled, Gagai walked to load the bases and Harvey was safe on an error as a run scored.

Basedow doubled as two more runs scored and Waginger unloaded a three-run homer.

Addis and Schwab both walked, moved up on a wild pitch and Swarts had a two-run single.

St. Joseph ended the game in the fifth inning with a 10-run mercy rule as Addis led off with a walk and Schwab hit a two-run walk-off home run.

Basedow was 2-2 and Swarts 2-3.
