PORTSMOUTH — Tomorrow came quickly.
After suffering their first loss of the season on Tuesday, the Ironton Fighting Tigers went right back to work on Wednesday and rebounded with an 8-5 win over the Portsmouth Trojans.
“The good thing about baseball is win or lose, you’re back at it right away. We picked ourselves up and bounced back pretty well,” Ironton coach Mark Lewis said.
“Our pitching was pretty good. T.J. threw well until he got tired and Rakes did a nice job.”
T.J. Keith turned in four plus innings to get his first career win and Chris Rakes pitched three strong innings of relief for his first save.
“I got a little tired,” said Keith who threw an inning on Tuesday. “I was still throwing strikes, but I wasn’t throwing as hard.”
Ironton (3-1) jumped on Portsmouth for eight runs in the first three innings.
Rakes singled, Dustin Preston was hit by a pitch and Keith had a two-out, run-scoring single. Trevor Allen doubled for a run, Darius Lewis was safe on an error as a run scored and Tanner Reed’s base hit drove in Allen.
The lead went to 5-0 in the second inning when Gagai singled and went to second on an outfield error and Preston delivered an RBI single.
Ironton had a two-out rally in the third inning to score three more.
Reed singled and scored on a double by Greg Kettle off the wall in center field. Rakes was safe on an error and Troy Allen doubled.
The Trojans (1-2) got two runs in the fourth on an error and hits by Brian Estep, Cody Colley and Jayson Jones.
Portsmouth got three more runs in the fifth before Rakes shut them down.
