Chad Miller just wanted to get outs. He almost got nothing but outs.

Miller pitched a no-hitter for six inning before settling for a two-hitter as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Rock Hill Redmen 4-1 Monday.

“I was throwing pretty well. I knew they had some good hitters. I just wanted to throw strikes and get outs,” Miller said.

Miller threw 91 pitches, 58 for strikes. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

“Chad pitched a heck of a game. When he’s on, he’s tough for anyone to hit,” Ironton coach Mark Lewis said.

Ironton (8-7) managed just six hits off Josh Moore and Michael Williams.

“Our pitching wasn’t bad, we just didn’t hit the ball,” Redmen coach Barry Litteral said.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning.

Troy Allen blooped a single just behind third base and scored on a triple by Dennis Gagai. Dustin Preston was hit by a pitch, stole second base and Tanner Reed spanked a two-run double.

The Fighting Tigers got an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Chris Rakes singled, stole second and raced to third base when the throw skipped into centerfield.

An out later, Gagai hit a sacrifice fly to score Rakes and make it 4-0.

T.J. Blagg singled on an 0-2 pitch leading off the seventh inning for Rock Hill’s first hit. He went to second on a balk and scored on a two-out single by J.C. Murnahan.

“I’ve been working on my change up and I just hung it up there and he hit it,” Miller said of his 0-2 pitch.

Ironton plays at Gallipolis Tuesday. Rock Hill visits Oak Hill Wednesday.
