Panthers beat Hornets in OVC, 9-3

COAL GROVE— A tight contest at the start turned into a one-team race.
Trailing after the first inning, the Chesapeake Panthers bounced back to beat the Coal Grove Hornets 9-3 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We started off pretty good, but we just didn’t finish,” Coal Grove coach John Jones said. “But give Chesapeake the credit. They played well the whole game.”
P.J. Rase got the win as he allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked six. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Rase and Bryon Huff doubled for a run to start the game and Cody Methax had a run-scoring single to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
But Coal Grove came back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Randy Wise sinlged, Alex Johnson walked and Tyler Branch singled for a run. Zach Murphy walked to load the bases and Eric Davidson delivered a two-run single.
Chesapeake answered with three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.
Kyle Rase walked, Clinton Baise had a bunt single and P.J. Rase hit a two-run triple. Huff grounded out as a run scored.
The Panthers made it -3 in the fourth inning when Baise walked, Josh Blair was hit by a pitch and Cory Methax singled.
Huff singled and Cody Methax hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for an 8-3 lead.
The final run scored in the seventh inning. Baise singled, Michael Wright reached on an error, both moved up a wild pitch and the run scored on a fielder’s choice.
Chesapeake is now 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the OVC. Coal Grove falls to 3-8 an 1-6.
The Hornets host Ashland, Ky., Tuesday. Chesapeake is at South Point Wednesday.
