Mother’s Day came early for the ladies who live at Bryant Health Center.
Volunteers with the COAD Senior Companion Program visited the nursing home Friday and brought corsages for each mother.
“So many times, families can’t make it to nursing homes and we thought this would be nice,” Linda Black, SCP coordinator, said. “This is the first year we’ve done this and we’re going to try and make it a tradition. Several of our senior companions live in the Towers (Sherman Thompson) and they knew some ladies who live here at Bryant’s who used to live at the Towers. We want to do something for Father’s Day as well. This is our community service project.”
The SCP provides in-home assistance to adults 55 years of age or older or to handicapped persons. The program is designed to help older adults remain independent in their own homes. Volunteers provide various forms of assistance ranging from help with personal care and housekeeping to socialization. The federally funded service is free and is administered locally by the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization. The Ohio Department of Aging also provides some funding for the program.
Nineteen Lawrence Countians volunteer for the senior program and spend 20 hours each week tending to the needs of area older and handicapped adults.
