CHESHIRE — Coal Grove coach John Jones had a hard time trying to single out individuals after their game with the River Valley Raiders Thursday.

But the Hornet player didn’t have any problem.

Coal Grove had 16 hits — all singles — as they routed the Raiders 14-4 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We had all singles, but they were legitimate hits. We hit the ball around pretty well all night,” Jones said.

Tyler Allen went the distance for the win. He allowed just two hits — one was an infield roller — and only two balls reached the outfield.

“We’ve had two good pitching performances two days in a row,” Jones said.

The Hornets got three runs in the first inning.

Randy Wise walked, stole second base and scored on a hit by Zach Murphy. An out later, Allen, Eric Davidson and Tyler Branch all singled to produce a run and Bryan Bryant hit a sacrifice fly..

The lead went to 5-0 in the second inning as Andrew Christian, Wise, Murphy and Alex Johnson put together four straight singles.

Coal Grove got a run in the third when Bryant reached on an error, stole second and Christian singled.

River Valley got a run in the bottom of the inning.

Devin Gibbs was safe on an error, was bunted to second, took third on an error and scored when Higginbotham was safe on an error.

Coal Grove got the run back in the fourth when Johnson singled, Allen walked and Davidson reached on an error.

The Hornets led went to 9-0 in the fifth inning.

With two outs, Wise singled, stole second and Murphy had an RBI single. Murphy stole second and came home on a hit by Johnson.

Coal Grove put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning.

With one out, Branch walked, stole second and took third on a passed ball. Bryant walked and on a passed ball Branch scored. An error on the play allowed Bryant to score.

Shannon Goodwin walked and Christian and Wise singled for a run. Murphy walked to load the bases and Scott Harbolt was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Andy Smith got a two-out single to drive in the final run.

River Valley scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning.
