Those of you who are craving some corn or have a hankering for some honeydew look no further. The Ironton farmer’s market will be open Saturday to satisfy all your produce desires.
The market will kick off the season at about 8 a.m. and will be open every Saturday through September in the same location, near the Fifth Street and Park Avenue intersection, according to Judy Balmer, one of the organizers of the market.
“I think it’s going to be a pretty good year,” said Balmer, of Elkins Creek. “We usually have a pretty good crowd and it has been successful in the past.”
She said there can be anywhere from five to 15 farmers who bring their goods to sell. All of them are homegrown and are of the finest quality, she said.
“It’s just an old tradition to come out here and do this,” Balmer said. “You can’t get the fresh stuff just anywhere. It’s not like you get in the grocery store, that’s for sure.”
She said bringing their cucumbers, tomatoes and onions to the city’s market is valuable not only to the farmers’ pocketbooks, but to the residents as well, especially the elderly and handicapped who may not be able to travel to get the locally raised goods.
“You have a lot of people moving into the city when they get older,” Balmer explained. “They move from the country to the high rises and places like that and can’t get out to get the fresh produce. These markets make it available closer to where they are.”
Balmer herself is a farmer and will be bringing her collection of produce as well as honey, jellies and jams that she has packed.
The crops have faired well this year, she said, and there should be a good selection to pick from. Some of the produce is “a smidgen late,” Balmer said, because of the “yo-yo type” weather the region has experienced.
“We got hot weather, then we got cold weather, she said with a laugh. “I don’t think they (crops) knew what to do.”
