PROCTORVILLE — The Rome Volunteer Fire Department is looking for local residents to step up and be a part of its largest fundraiser of the year.

The department has mailed out about 6,000 flyers asking for the community’s financial support and is now waiting for responses.

The envelope has red printing, contains an informational brochure, a donation request card and a pre-addressed stamped envelope.

Mike Boster, fire chief, said flyers have been sent to residents in Crown City, Proctorville and Scottown. Just those who are served by the Rome department, not other surrounding departments, are asked to give financial support.

Each year, the department’s mailings net between $15,000 and $20,000. Boster said they only receive responses from about 20 percent of the people, but are hoping to get more people on board this time around.

“This is really a major source of income for us. It’s a critical part of budget because it helps with operating costs, things such as fuel, insurance and utilities,” Boster said.

So far, he said there has been a good response to this year’s campaign. But, there is still plenty of time to mail in your contribution.

In addition to the massive mailing, the fire department is planning its annual golf tournament September 23 at Sugarwood Golf Course in Wayne County, W.Va. Entry fees are $240 for a four-person team and $60 for an individual. Tee times will begin at 1 p.m.
