SOUTH POINT — In the book of Matthew in the Bible Jesus tells two brothers “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

The Tri-State Worship Center in South Point is hoping that local residents will reflect upon that passage and be a part of their fishing day Saturday at Jerry’s Lake.

The church will sponsor Family Fun Day from 5 to 9 p.m. at the lake, located off County Road 1. The church sponsors similar events several times a year, but this is the first time one will be held at Jerry’s Lake. In the past, they have been held at the South Point Park.

“Jesus went among the people to witness,” said Brenda Horan, church member and organizer of Family Fun Day. “We want to show God’s love by being out among the people. We want to reach out to the community.”

The event will feature hot dogs, chips and other refreshments. There will also be marshmallows roasted over a bonfire. The church’s drama team will be performing and there will be a variety of music. Fishing will be $5 per person. It costs extra to be entered in the tag jackpots or other special contests.

“Sitting down in a church doesn’t really show anything. It’s getting out to the families and letting them know that if they need us we are here to help,” Horan explained. “It’s so important to reach out to the community.”

Although the event is not a way to recruit new members, she said the fun-filled evening doesn’t hurt the church’s cause. There have been several families who have starting coming to services after attending one of the Family Fun Days. Also, there are a few people who have asked to be baptized Saturday.

“There are not many family-oriented events in the community, so that’s why we feel so strongly about this. You can bring the whole family and have fun,” Horan said.

Lake owner Charles Copley is a member of the Tri-State Worship Center. He said he’s already had positive feedback about the upcoming event.

“A lot of the young kids already come out here, so this is just another way for them to enjoy the lake and for us to reach out to them,” he said.
