PROCTORVILLE — While some local families are planning getaways to beaches and theme parks around the country, some simply cannot find the money or the time to take their children on a vacation — that’s where the Kiwanis wants to help.

The Southeast Lawrence County Kiwanis Club is one of several in the Tri-State sponsoring Kiwanis Kids Day Friday at Camden Park in Kenova. Kids who sign up with Kiwanis ahead of time can get in the park free. Parents and guardians can get in for $10.25 each. Tickets can be picked up near the entrance of the park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Ron McClintock, president of the Southeast Lawrence County Kiwanis Club, said the event has become a popular community outreach event for every club involved — several in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia participate. Years ago, it was held annually, but went off the radar screen for a while. Kids Day was brought back about three years ago, McClintock explained.

“We were really glad to see it restarted. There are so many underprivileged kids who can’t afford to go to King’s Island. Some of them can’t even come to Camden Park. So, this gives them the opportunity to have some sort of enjoyment this summer,” McClintock said.

He has fond memories of going to Camden Park with his dad, he said, which are even more precious to him since he dad is deceased.

“All children should have those kinds of memories,” McClintock said.

The Kiwanis are still looking for local children who would like to attend Friday’s event, said Pam Legg, the organization’s secretary. The local group can take 30 children free of charge; additional children who sign up after those spaces have been filled can get in the park at the reduced rate of $10.25.

“We are hoping that every body who wants to go will have that opportunity,” Legg said. “It’s on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

She said more than 200 kids are sponsored by Kiwanis groups each year for the Camden Park event.

“It means a lot to these kids and its something that many people with a large family could not do,” Legg said. “For the kids who don’t get a vacation this year, it’s a great experience.”
