PROCTORVILLE — Nothing like a good night to end a long day.

For the second straight year, the Fairland Dragons ended two-a-day football workouts with a night practice.

“This is to put an exclamation on our two-a-day practices,” Fairland coach Brent Wilcoxon said.

“It was the seniors’ idea last year and the kids really liked it. The seniors came to me this year and, frankly, I had forgot. They liked it and I couldn’t think of a good reason not to.”

The Dragons conducted their first practice Thursday in the morning and then went from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wilcoxon said splitting the practices so far apart actually was beneficial to assistant coach Eugene Jordan.

“We finished practices at one (a.m.) and coach Jordan then went straight to work because that’s when he normally goes to work,” Wilcoxon said.

While the players enjoyed practicing at such a late hour, Wilcoxon said he had to take preventative measures to survive the workout session.

“I took a nap this afternoon to stay awake. I didn’t want to fall asleep in the middle of practice,” Wilcoxon said with a chuckle.

Although some people might think the practice schedule is unconventional, Wilcoxon noted that “the old school coaches would practice before school. I don’t plan to do that.”

Area teams will conduct their first scrimmages Saturday except South Point which plays at Minford on Tuesday. Final scrimmages and previews will be held next Friday.
