PORTSMOUTH — Are you ready for some offense?

The Portsmouth Trojans and Chesapeake Panthers had little trouble amassing points and yardage in Friday’s season opener.

Portsmouth racked up 651 yards offense and the Panthers 439 as the Trojans outscored Chesapeake 71-44.

“We went down there for a football game and a track meet broke out,” Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

Portsmouth only led 42-32 at the half. But the Trojans used two critical mistakes by the Panthers to pull away to a 64-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“The momentum turned around in the third quarter. I thought if we stayed within a touchdown we had a chance, but we had a couple of bad breaks and they capitalized,” Davis said. “If we get a break here or there, it’s pretty even.”

Portsmouth went up 50-32 to begin the third quarter on a 53-yard pass from Shane Porter to John Harcha.

Chesapeake quarterback Terry Brown got loose for a 48-yard run but was stripped of the ball at the 2-yard line.

The Panthers did come back to score again on a 20-yard run by Jaran Bartoe to trail 50-38, but Portsmouth got two quick touchdowns to end the quarter and put the game out of reach.

Chaze Southern had a 5-yard scoring run for the Trojans. He then intercepted a pass to set up a 12-yard run by Porter with 35 seconds left in the quarter.

Southern had a 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter while Mike Stapleton bolted 80 yards for the Panthers final score.

Stapleton, who scored three times including an 82-yard kickoff return, rushed nine times for 140 yards.

“Stapleton played pretty well. He made some big plays,” Davis said.

Aaron Ross had an interception for Chesapeake.

Porter finished the game 17 of 25 for 361 yards. He also ran nine times for 105 yards.

Teammate Wes Jordan rushed 13 times for 109 yards.
