COAL GROVE - There’s a reason the Coal Grove Hornets got off to a good start: Their players were good.

Coal Grove’s first team defense held East to just one first down while the offense scored on each of its first five possessions to rout the Portsmouth Tartans 48-0 Friday.

“We played real well. We played as sound as we have in a couple of years,” Hornets coach Dave Lucas said.

Coal Grove, 3-2, jumped on the Tartans with 28 points in the first quarter and led 35-0 at the half.

Shane Jenkins scored two touchdowns while Trent Blankenship, quarterback Eric Davidson, Matt Cooper, Nathan Gully and Jacob Jenkins each had a touchdown for the Hornets first team.

The Hornets backups punched in a pair of scores in the second half.

Neil Taylor kicked six conversions.
