Ironton volleyball breaks Jackson’s winning streak

The Jackson Ironwomen were looking at an unbeaten regular season. But that’s when they had to stare the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers in the eye.

Inspired by a vocal Senior Night crowd, Ironton shocked Jackson with an emotional four-sets win Monday, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

The game was the home finale for seniors Mandi Boykin, Shawnte Lewis, Nikki Harbolt, Krista Markel and Rachel Walker.

The win improves Ironton to 14-5 overall and the Lady Tigers finished second in the South Division with a 7-5 record.

The loss left Jackson with an 18-1 record overall and 11-1 in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League South Division.

Ironton is scheduled to play Saturday at Athens High School in the league tournament. Ironton will play Logan for third place at 5 p.m.

Jackson and Warren play for first and second place in the final match of the tournament that gets underway at 11 a.m.

In the reserve match, Ironton won in two sets, 25-23 and 25-21.

Sarah Jones and Janie Morris had 8 points each, C.J. Fletcher, Autumn Markel and Edi Taylor scored 6 points apiece. Markel had two aces.
