WEST PORTSMOUTH – They’re doing it again.

Ironton sophomore Nathan Kerns and senior Seth Christian were at the top of the leaderboard once again Tuesday at the Division II Southeast sectional golf tournament at Shawnee Golf Course.

Kerns shared medalist honors with Portsmouth’s Charlie Doll, each carding a 1-under par 71. Kerns fired a par 35 on the front nine and went 1-under on the par 36 back nine.

It marked the 10th time in 15 tournaments this season Kerns has won or shared medalist honors.

Christian shot a 3-over 75 and joined Kerns as qualifiers for the district tournament Monday at Cook’s Creek Golf Course in Circleville.

“I can’t say enough about those two kids. They’ve played well all year,” Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said.

The top four teams and four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament.

West Union won the tournament with a 311 team score. The other qualifiers for the district were Portsmouth West at 315, Portsmouth 318 and Piketon at 333.

Ironton was 20 strokes off Piketon’s total, but Fighting Tigers coach Kerns was not disappointed.

Ironton shot 353 as a team, its best score in an 18-hole tournament this year, and finished eight among 16 full teams. River Valley had just three players and did not qualify as a team.

“All I asked the kids at the beginning of the year was to get better from start to finish and that’s what they did,” coach Kerns said.

Aaron Christian finished with a 102, Michael Filkins 105 and Tanner Reed 106.

South Point, which finished seventh at 346, was led by Justin Lewis who shot an 84. Tommy Walker had an 85, Chase McWhorter 86 and Josh Jones and Andrew Davis each had a 91.

Fairland posted a 383 team score. Ian Russell shot an 87, Tyler Perry 95, Adam Barry 99, Trevor Franklin 102 and Chris Ward 105.

Rock Hill’s 419 total was comprised from its top four scores of Nathan Davenport at 99, Kenny Anderson 103, Mitchell Davenport 105, Josh Malone 109 and Daniel McGuire 115.
