COAL GROVE — The only way the St. Joseph Flyers could win was to be abnormal.

Instead of their usual outings at Coal Grove, the Flyers hit 45 percent of their shots as they downed the Hornets 56-45 Tuesday.

“It was a good win for us. We normally don’t shoot well there, but we played pretty well especially since we we’re without three starters and on the road,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

St. Joseph (5-1) was missing Ryan Staton and Ryan Schwab due to illness and leading scorer Cory Lewis who is still sidelined with a sprained knee.

But Caleb Blackburn and Alex Brown filled those voids with some solid performances. Blackburn started and had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Chad Harvey had 21 points, 5 steals and 3 assists and Michael Basedow 18 points to lead the Flyers. Jerrod Laber pulled down 8 rebounds.

Tyler Branch had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets. Adam Bare grabbed 10 rebounds and Eric Davidson had 6 points and 5 rebounds.

“Caleb was huge. We had him on Bare and Bare is a load inside,” Hacker said. “Jerrod and Caleb did a heck of a job on their big guys.”

Basedow opened the game with 12 points in the first quarter including a 4-point play as St. Joseph took a 16-9 lead.

“We told the kids Basedow was a good shooter. He came out and shot the lights out. Give St. Joe credit. They were short-handed and they had some kids step up for them,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

Branch and Bare scored 4 points each in the second quarter as Coal Grove got within 22-17 at the break.

But Harvey and Blackburn combined for 15 points in the third quarter as the Flyers extended their lead to 37-27.

Harvey scored 9 points in the fourth quarter including 7 of 12 from the foul line. The Flyers were 9 of 16 at the line in the quarter.
