The “Gold Out” became a lights out.

With the St. Joseph crowd adorned in gold apparel, the Flyers responded with a 57 percent shooting night as they beat the Rock Hill Redmen 78-59 Friday night.

“We shot the lights out of it,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said. “But we played some good defense, too. That helped out our offense. We got some transition baskets and we played team basketball. Even the guys on the bench were cheering like crazy.”

The hot shots for the Flyers (3-0) were Cory Lewis with 24 points and Michael Basedow with 21 points. Also in double figures were Chad Harvey with 15 points and Jerrod Laber who scored 10.

“We had a hand in Lewis’ face and he just kept making it,” Redmen coach Adam Simpson. “Give them credit. They were pumped up and the crowd was pumped up and they played a great game.”

Rock Hill (0-2) used a balanced offense to put five players in double figures. Mike Ison and Matt Matney had 13 points each while Nathan Davenport, Aaron Butler and Andrew Stumbo netting 10 each.

Besides the torrid shooting, the Flyers had 35 rebounds and kept Rock Hill’s rebounding to a minimum.

“That was a big key. Putting Jerrod (Laber) on Davenport was huge. We didn’t tell him until two minutes before the game,” Hacker said. “We had to shut him down and keep him off the boards and he and Staton did a good job of that. I was really impressed.”

Leading 15-11, St. Joseph went on a 7-2 run to end the first quarter to lead 22-13. Lewis had 9 points and Basedow 7 while Butler and Matney combined for 9 of Rock Hill’s points.

Basedow scored 7 more points in the second quarter to offset 3 points each by Davenport and Matney as the Flyers extended their lead to 35-23.

Butler got 5 points with Davenport and Matney 4 each in the third quarter as Rock Hill cut the deficit to 47-39. Harvey and Lewis scored 6 points each for all of St. Joseph’s points in the quarter.

Stumbo had 8 of his points and Ison 7 for Rock Hill in the fourth quarter, but Laber scored 8 points, and Basedow 7 and the Flyers were 12 of 16 from the line when the Redmen were forced to foul.

Lewis was 5 of 6 at the line down the stretch.
