PORTSMOUTH — It seems Chase McWhorter is pretty valuable to the South Point Pointers offense.

South Point had the lead thanks to the scoring of McWhorter, lost the lead when he went out in foul trouble, then edged out a 54-52 win over the Portsmouth Trojans Friday when the senior forward returned.

“We were happy to win on the road. We did some things right and some things wrong. We’ll continue to improve I hope,” Pointers coach Gary Norris said. “Chase did a nice job. He got in some foul trouble, but he was a factor at the end.”

Anthony Williams had 6 points in the first quarter to help offset 7 by McWhorter as Portsmouth took a 15-13 lead.

The game was tied at 20-20 midway through the second quarter when South Point used a quick spurt to take a 29-23 halftime lead.

The Pointers managed to take the lead despite having McWhorter on the bench the final three minutes of the quarter in foul trouble after scoring 8 more points.

South Point went ahead 41-32 early in the third quarter before an 11-2 run by the Trojans tied the game at 43.

But after sitting out the third quarter, McWhorter returned and scored 8 more points in the fourth quarter and Chris Brown sank a late free throw to seal the win.

McWhorter finished with a game-high 23 points. Beau Weed had 14 points and Brown added 9 for the Pointers (2-1).

Williams had 11 points and Nate Cadogan 9 for Portsmouth (0-3).
