CHESAPEAKE — Ron Reed isn’t one to complain.

Much.

Reed wasn’t totally pleased but he was more than happy after the Chesapeake Panthers snapped a 3-game losing streak and beat the Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Fighting Irish 56-53 Tuesday in a non-league game.

“We didn’t play that well, but a ‘W’ anytime is better than the alternative,” Reed said.

Mike Stapleton had 14 points and Marty Clay scored 13 to pace the Panthers (2-3). Jonathan Greene added 10 points and Kyle Rase had 9.

Khiry Sharp had 18 points and Brian Miller 15 for the Irish.

The Panthers built as much as a 20-point lead only to watch the Irish battle back in the fourth quarter.

“We needed a win. These kids all played jayvees last year and they’re just starting to learn to adjust,” Reed said.

Chesapeake jumped ahead 18-7 at the end of the first quarter before the Irish got within 32-26 at the break.

The Panthers lead was 45-32 at the end of the third quarter, then held on as St. Joseph outscored Chesapeake 21-11 in the fourth quarter.

Chesapeake hosts River Valley Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
