If there is a ‘super sneaker,” Ironton Fighting Tigers head coach Mark LaFon will be the first in line to purchase a dozen pair for his team after a 60-46 win over the Jackson Ironmen Tuesday.

Despite the win, LaFon was not happy with his team’s overall effort, especially in the second quarter when he pulled all his starters with five minutes left in the half and saw a 19-13 lead turn into a 25-23 halftime deficit.

“You play defense with your feet,” LaFon said. “We did that in the first quarter, but then we started reaching and pushing in the second quarter. We’re just not playing with consistency or intensity all the time.”

The starters returned in the third quarter along with their defense and Ironton outscored the Ironmen 18-5 to take a 41-30 lead.

Tyler Shoemaker scored 8 points in the quarter including a putback with 2:40 left in the quarter that ignited a 10 unanswered points to end the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Zach Christensen erased any Jackson hopes of a comeback as he scored 10 of his 12 points. Christensen drained a pair of 3-pointers in less than a minute that gave Ironton a 47-36 lead with 5:14 to play.

Chad Miller converted both ends of a one-and-one to give Ironton a 54-40 lead, but a foul shot by Byron Delong and two by Tyler Boggs got Jackson within 54-43.

But Christensen was 4 of 4 at the foul line and T.J. Keith hit both his free throws as Ironton took a 60-43 lead with 23 seconds left.

Jackson’s Josh Brown hit a 3-pointer with five seconds to go that set the final score.

Miller led Ironton (8-3, 4-2) with 13 points while Shoemaker and Christensen had 12 each.

Patrick Dill had 15 points and Kyle Ondera 10

— all in the first half — for Jackson (5-5, 2-4).

“We need to learn how to finish teams off. We get a big lead and then we let up. You can’t keep turning it on and off, especially against some of the teams we have to play over the next two weeks,” LaFon said.

Ironton hosts unbeaten and Southeastern Ohio Athletic League favorite Zanesville Friday and may do it without starting point guard Marc Carter.

Carter suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter and did not return.
