PEDRO — First they sputtered, then they streaked.

After losing the lead during a bad stretch, the Rock Hill Redmen rebounded with a scoring stretch of their own to beat the South Gallia Rebels 53-50 Tuesday.

“We had a period where we just couldn’t do anything right and before you knew it they were ahead,” Redmen coach Adam Simpson said.

“But then we went on a little run of our own and that was the difference.”

Rock Hill had the lead only to commit six straight turnovers as South Gallia came back to take a 50-45 lead.

Andrew Stumbo then converted a 3-point play and Matt Matney hit a jumper from close range to tie the game.

Mike Ison came up with a steal and layup to put the Redmen ahead with 20 seconds left. Rock Hill got the ball back and Stumbo was fouled. He hit one of two shots and the Rebels were unable to score again.

“They’re a tough matchup for us,” Simpson said. “I didn’t realize we shot the ball that well. I knew they couldn’t handle us in the paint, so we made some adjustments and kept taking the ball inside on them.”

Rock Hill (10-5) was 21 of 39 from the field for 53.9 percent.

Matney pumped in 9 points in the first quarter but Dustin McCombs got 6 and Travis McCarty 5 as the Rebels took a 15-14 lead.

Aaron Butler, Stumbo and Davenport scored 2 points each as the Redmen had just 6 points in the second quarter and fell behind 26-20 at the half.

In the third quarter, Matney scored 6, Nathan Davenport 5 and Stumbo 4 as the Redmen rallied to take a 37-36 lead.

That set up the thrilling finish and Rock Hill’s 8th straight win.

Matney led the Redmen with 19 points. Stumbo had 15 points and 6 rebounds while Davenport had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

McCombs had 17 points and McCarty 10 to lead the Rebels (13-2).
