ATHENS
— Don’t put the mats up just yet.
Wrestling season will continue for eight area wrestlers after qualifying for the Division III district meet next weekend at Heath High School including three from Fairland and five from Chesapeake.
The Fairland Dragons were led by senior Michael Evans who was a champion in the 140-pound weight class.
The Dragons also had senior Chuck Wentz get a district berth after taking third place in the 112-pound division. His win came at the expense the Chesapeake Panthers freshman Trevor Sydenstricker
However, Syndenstricker also advances on the strength of his fourth place finish. The top four finishers qualify for the district meet.
Zac Fannin was Fairland’s third qualifier with a fourth place finish in the 145-pound division.
The Panthers top finisher was Brad Wiley in the 285 division after his pin of Fabian Weiss of Zane Trace.
Panthers coach Phil Davis said the Panthers have shown improvement late in the season.
“We were making mistakes, but we’ve been having good practices,” said Davis.
Besides Sydenstricker, three other Panthers placed fourth.
Chris Myers was fourth at 103 pounds, Jarred Ellis at 119, and Marcus Stallo in the 152-pound class.
Fairland’s Garrett Wireman was fifth in the 119 class and Chesapeake’s Thomas Lewis was fifth at 125.
Taking sixth place were the Dragons Will Lively at 130 and Chesapeake’s Josh Hughes in the 215 division.
