ATHENS — Is there a shot doctor in the Convo?

The Fairland Dragons were looking for the Ohio University Convocation Center medical staff in the fourth quarter to fix their ailing field goal shooting.

With no antidote available, the Dragons were 2 of 19 from the field in the fourth quarter as they saw the Oak Hill Oaks rally for a 56-48 win in the Division III district championship Saturday.

“We couldn’t make a shot,” Fairland coach Chad Belville said. “We didn’t finish. We didn’t finish the whole game. If you shoot 2 for 19 in the fourth quarter, you’re not going to win and you don’t

deserve to win.”

Fairland had built a 39-29 lead with 3:04 left in the third quarter on a layup by Cole Hatfield.

Casey Love hit a 3-pointer and a 10-footer and Cody Cannon got a putback basket as the Oaks cut the deficit to 40-36 at the end of the quarter.

“We told the kids at halftime we’re not going to get it all back at once,” said Oaks coach Norm Persin. “We cut it to four and once we got the lead we forced them to take bad shots.”

An 8-footer by Corey Farmer tied the game at 42-42. Hatfield made a triple with 5:44 left to give Fairland its last lead at 45-42.

Love nailed a trey to tie the game and Garland Stiltner’s layup at the 5-minute mark put the Oaks up for good.

Oak Hill was just 7 of 17 from the foul line over the final 4:10, but the Dragons couldn’t capitalize with their poor shooting.

Fairland (15-7) was only16 of 62 from the field for the game.

“We got frustrated and let it affect us. We had the game where we wanted it and they hit a couple of shots at the end of the third quarter and we couldn’t buy a bucket,” Belville said.

Hatfield led Fairland with 19 points. Dustin Bumgardner had 9 rebounds.

We like our chances to get back here next year,” Belville said of his team that does not include a senior. “We’re young and we’ll take another shot at it..”

Stiltner scored 20 points and Love 15 - all in the second half - to lead the Oaks.

The district championship was not only the first for the Oak Hill boys, but the first for any boys team in Jackson County.

Oak Hill (14-10) plays at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday in the regional semifinals at the Convocation Center.
