Fairland wins with no magic formula

PROCTORVILLE — No Madame Rue. No wicked witch. No David Copperfield.

Just fundamentals.

Trailing at halftime, the Fairland Dragons didn’t do anything special in the second half but still rallied to beat the South Point Pointers 67-54 in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference game Friday.

“We didn’t use any magical potion or do anything special,” said Fairland coach Chad Belville. “We just told them to keep the ball in front of you, hit the boards, play under control, and we just went out there and executed.”

The simple formula means the Dragons (11-5, 7-1) can clinch the OVC title with a win at Rock Hill Monday. Rock Hill needs a win to pull into a tie for the league.

South Point’s title hopes all but vanished. The Pointers are 6-3 in the OVC and 11-5 overall.

Zach Jordan scored 8 points in the first quarter as Fairland took a 16-12 lead.

“Zach had several steals and deflections that got us off to great start. He had a hot hand and we rode him,” Belville said.

South Point rallied in the second quarter to take a 31-27 lead at the break.

But Michael Lamb scored 10 points and the Dragons forced five turnovers to begin the second half as Fairland held the Pointers to 6 points to take a 45-37 lead.

Fairland led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter as Lamb had 9 points and Jordan 5. Chase McWhorter had three treys as the Pointers kept battling.

“We were right there in (McWhorter’s) face and he still hit the shots. He’s playing well for them,” Belville said.

Lamb scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Jordan had a season-high 15 points.

McWhorter finished with 24 points and Beau Weed added 10 points. Chris Brown was held to 6 points.

“Cole really did a good job on (Chris) Brown. He takes it personal. He doesn’t want his guy to score,” Belville said.
