GALLIPOLIS — The explosion had nothing to do with dynamite or even powerful fireworks.

The explosion heard Monday was the Fairland Lady Dragons 69-25 rout of the Ohio Valley Christian Lady Defenders.

Three players were in double figures and nine of the 10 Lady Dragons reached the scoring column in their biggest output of the young season.

Molly Bumgardner had 14 points and 7 rebounds to lead Fairland. Christin Capper had 11 points and 7 rebounds and Erika Smoot also had 11 points.

Destinee Spears led the Lady Dragons with 10 rebounds and Megan Auxier and Shea Berry had 3 assists each.

The Lady Dragons held OVC scoreless in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead.

Bumgardner and Emily McMaster combined for 11 points in the second quarter as Fairland built a 37-11 halftime cushion.

Beth Schlegel scored all 6 of her points and Bumgardner also had 6 points as Fairland extended its lead to 53-23 at the end of the third quarter.

Smoot and Capper had 6 points each in the fourth quarter and the defense shut down OVC 16-2 in the fourth quarter to win going away.

Ohio Valley Christian struggled offensively. The Lady Defenders were 8 of 50 shooting from the field for a 16 percent shooting night.

Conversely, Fairland was 32 of 74 from the field for 47 percent.

Fairland (1-2) plays at Rock Hill today in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.
