WAVERLY — Just like Hannibal Smith of the A-Team, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers love it when a plan comes together.

Megan Edwards had 30 points and Kim Kline 21 in Nelsonville-York’s 82-65 sectional title win over Minford. Ironton’s plan was to stop the duo.

The plan worked in A-Team fashion as Kline had just 10 points and Edwards only 7 and Ironton rolled to a 61-47 win in the Division III district semifinals Wednesday.

“Our plan was to take away Kline and Edwards,” Ironton coach Doug Graham said. “Edwards is one of the best post players around and Kline is a good shooter. They’re team is a scoring machine. They can put 75, 80 points on anyone.

“Rachel (Walker) did a tremendous job on Edwards and Michelle Pancake came in and did a tremendous job inside, too. And we didn’t let Kline hurt us.”

Speaking of hurt, Ironton appeared to suffer a tremendous blow when leading scorer Jessica Waddle suffered a twisted knee after hitting a baseline jumper with 4:37 left in the first quarter. Ironton led 9-3 and N-Y took a timeout.

Waddle went running to the Ironton huddle and her knee gave out, thus sidelining her for the rest of the game.

“The first thing that went through my head was Ted Ginn Jr. in the Fiesta Bowl. She just planted her foot and her knee gave out. But she’s a gamer. She’ll be ready for the next game,” Graham said.

With Waddle out, Brea Tackett came off the bench and scored 10 points and starting guard Kayla Wileman also had 10 points to lead a balanced Ironton offense. Mercedes Crockrel led Ironton with 16 points.

“Brea Tackett is just a freshman and she did a great job in a big game. Kayla Wileman stepped up and hit some big shots. Mercedes Crockrel had a big game and Mandi Boykin did her usual job. We had a lot of people step up,” Graham said.

Ironton took a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter as neither team shot well. But Ironton’s offense picked up in the second quarter and the defense held N-Y to 2 of 15 shooting.

Back-to-back shots by Tackett and Sami Morgan gave Ironton a 31-15 lead with 58 seconds left in the half. A 3-pointer by Tackett and a foul shot with one second on the clock made it 35-19 at the half.

A steal and layup by Tackett gave Ironton its biggest lead at 48-24 late in the third quarter.

The Lady Buckeyes were down 52-36 with 5:25 left, but a foul shot by Boykin and a 3-pointer by Wileman made it 56-36 at the 4:23 mark and Ironton coasted the rest of the way.

Ironton (16-6) will play Alexander at 7 p.m. next Wednesday in the district finals.
