CHESAPEAKE — The schedule said the game was against the Alexander Spartans, but the Chesapeake Panthers ended up playing two teams.

The second team may have been the tougher of the two.

Plagued by 24 turnovers, the Panthers lost a 47-44 decision to Alexander Saturday night in a non-league game.

“We played hard, but we played against Alexander and Chesapeake,” Panthers coach Bryan Wells said. “We had a lot of unforced turnovers.”

Turnovers were the biggest downfall of the Panthers who had 16 in the first half as they fell behind by 10 points.

Alexander started the game with a 9-3 run and Zach Hedrick had 7 points to make it 17-10 at the end of the quarter. Mike Stapleton had 9 points in the first half to keep the Panthers within striking range at 29-19 at the break.

Kyle Webb drained three treys in the third quarter to rally the Panthers to within 38-30.

The Panthers Kyle Rase scored all 8 of his points in the fourth quarter but the Spartans were able to hang on for the win.

Chesapeake outscored Alexander 25-18 in the second half.

“Our consistency has been really bad. But we’re playing hard, they’re competing and that’s all we can ask,” said Wells.

Chesapeake was 11 of 22 from the field in the second half but just 8 of 19 in the first half.

Stapleton had 14 points, 4 assists and 4 steals to lead the Panthers (6-13). Webb had 11 points and Jonathan Greene grabbed 11 rebounds.

Alexander (12-5) was led by Hedrick with 17 points and Matt Demosky scored 15.
