ATHENS — South Point Coach Gary Norris lamented his team’s inability to score.

It might have had something to do with the Pointers’ scorer, Chase McWhorter, playing less than a quarter as South Point lost 62-56 to the Oak Hill Oaks Saturday in the Div. III district semifinals at Ohio University.

McWhorter, averaging 19 points per game, picked up two quick fouls to start the game and a third to begin the second quarter. He fouled out with 4:21 left in regulation after scoring just 6 points.

“We got down and came back to tie it. We just had trouble scoring,” Norris said. “We couldn’t get anything to fall.”

South Point trailed 36-32 entering the fourth quarter. The Oaks led the entire quarter including 51-48 with 35 seconds left following two free throws by Garland Stiltner.

South Point’s Chris Brown missed a three-point attempt and Oak Hill got the rebound, only to step out of bounds.

Given a second chance, Brown drained a three-pointer with 12 seconds left to tie the game.

Chase Kratzenberg made a layup to open the overtime and give South Point its first lead since the end of the first quarter. But J.D. Hale sank two free throws, Cody Cannon had a putback and Casey Love sank two more free throws to make the score 57-53.

Brown hit a long triple and it was 57-56. But Love was 5-6 at the foul line as South Point missed two more three point attempts to give Oak Hill the win.

Beau Weed scored 8 points in the first quarter to help South Point to a 14-12 lead.

Oak Hill used a three-pointer by Love to start the second quarter and McWhorter picked up his third foul.

The Oaks led by as many as 5 points before SP tied the game 22-22 on a 17-footer by Weed.

Two foul shots by Hale made it 24-22 at the break.

Oak Hill led by seven in the third quarter when Weed hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to 36-32 entering the fourth quarter.

“We stayed in the press too long in the first quarter. They had eight points off the press and we put them at the foul line, which was something we didn’t want to do,” Norris said.

“But the kids played hard. They didn’t give up.”

The Oaks were good at the foul line, converting 22-26 and also out rebounded the Pointer 33-22.

Weed had 20 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Pointers (14-7). Brown scored 15 points and Joey Stevens had eight rebounds.

Hale scored 22 points to lead Oak Hill (13-10). Love had 12 points while Stiltner and Farmer had 11 each.

Oak Hill, coached by former Chesapeake head coach Norm Persin, will play Fairland in the District Finals at 5 p.m. Saturday at Ohio University.
