PEDRO — Maybe Matt Fulks should double as a mechanic.

When the Rock Hill Redwomen began to sputter, Fulks called a time out. Following a “pep” talk, the Redwomen got their engines running again as they beat the River Valley Lady Raiders 54-46 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We’d get up 10 and then relax. I called a timeout and we had a little wake up call and they seemed to respond,” said Fulks.

Bobbi Harper had 4 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill took an 11-9 lead.

Elista Daniels and Harper combined for 8 points in the second quarter and the lead grew to 24-14 at the break.

But River Valley went on a 6-0 run to start the second half. Iliana Corfias and McKenzie Cluxon scoring 7 points each the Lady Raiders eventually closed to within 34-32 at the end of the quarter.

“They made a little run at us. They’re battlers. They don’t quit. I give them credit,” said Fulks.

But Brooke Long scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and Daniels hit a 25-footer with 2:30 left to help the Redwomen open up a 7-point lead as they held on to win.

Rachel Walburn had 7 points in the quarter to try and rally the Lady Raiders.

“We just did enough. We played in spurts. We did some things that were good and some things that weren’t good. We hope to work things out before Saturday,” said Fulks.

The Redwomen face Chesapeake at 8 p.m. Saturday at Lucasville Valley High School in the Division III sectional tournament.

Rock Hill, 9-11 and tied for third in the OVC at 5-5, was led by Long with 22 points. Harper had 12 points and Daniels got a career-high 9 points.

Corfias and Walburn had 11 points each to lead River Valley.

The game marked the final home game for seniors Anna Bridges, Ashley Jenkins, Gretchen Dickess and Harper.

“We’ve improved in each of the last three years and these girls have had a big impact on our improvement,” said Fulks.
