SOUTH POINT — Going in sent the South Pointer Pointers down.

The River Valley Raiders used their inside game to upset South Point 64-60 Friday to knock the Pointers out of first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

South Point is now 6-2 in the OVC, one game behind Fairland which beat Coal Grove and is now 6-1. River Valley is 10-7 and 5-3 in the league.

Ryan Morrow scored 19 points and Jason Jones had 17 as the Raiders inside game hurt the Pointers defense throughout the game.

“They were able to penetrate and get our big men in foul trouble,” Pointers coach Gary Norris said. “We didn’t keep Morrow and Jones out of the paint. We knew we couldn’t let them outrebound us and they did.”

River Valley took a 16-12 lead at the end of the first half before the Pointers came back to get within 28-27 at the half. Chase McWhorter scored 10 of his points in the first half for South Point.

The Pointers were guilty of fouls on the first five defensive possession in the third quarter and the spread remained at one point to end the quarter, 40-39.

Chris Brown and McWhorter scored 8 points each in the fourth quarter as the Pointers took a 4-point lead.

But Morrow scored 11 points and River Valley turned two straight turnovers into baskets to take a lead they never relinquished.

“We turned the ball over two straight times and they got the lead and we never got it back,” said Norris. “We just didn’t take care of the ball. We didn’t extend the lead when we had the chance and they just came down and made big shots.”
