Call them the Touchdown 12.

A dozen area football players were honored by the Associated Press Wednesday when they were named to the All-Ohio team.

Honored in Division V were Coal Grove’s Trent Blankenship, Adam Bare and Jared Dever along with Chesapeake’s Kersten Harris and Mike Stapleton.

Drawing the laurels in Division VI were Symmes Valley’s Howie Dempsey, Kirt Shipley and Chris Capper as well as Green’s Ian Kelley, Curtis Botkins, James McGuire and Jon Buter.

All 12 were first team all-district.

A 6-foot, 320-pound senior, Dever was a force at defensive tackle and also played on the offensive line.

Bare (6-2, 250) also was a two-way standout lineman and a key reason for the Hornets strong running game.

Blankenship, a 5-9, 155-pound senior running back, carried 215 times for 1,365 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Harris, a 5-10, 190-pound senior, led the Panthers with 124 tackles at linebacker. He also ran 111 times for 643 yards.

The speedy Stapleton (6-0, 165), also a senior, led Chesapeake with 845 yards on 86 carries for a 9.8 average in just nine games. On defense, he had three interceptions and 47 tackles as a defensive back.

Dempsey, a 5-11, 185-pound senior, was the top offensive lineman for the Vikings and also shined on defense.

Shipley (6-1, 175), also a senior, led the Vikings with 625 yards rushing on 138 carries and with 18 receptions for 291 yards. He scored nine touchdowns.

Only a junior, Capper (6-2, 175) ran 104 times for 478 yards and nine TDs. He was 34 of 82 passing for 614 yards and four scores.

Kelley (6-2, 220) and Botkins (6-0, 200) were the Bobcats version of twins with both playing guard and defensive line. They were the key blockers in the Bobcats high-scoring offense.

McGuire (5-10, 170) was undersized for a fullback but was a workhorse with 221 carries for 1,163 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Butler (5-9, 160) was a solid defensive back who play both wide receiver and quarterback. He caught 17 passes for 131 yards and ran 96 times for 530 yards.

McGuire and Butler are both juniors.
