AID — Big hits meant a big win.

The Symmes Valley Vikings came up with some big hits that propelled them to a 10-8 Southern Ohio Conference win over the East Tartans Monday.

“It was a real good win and we had a lot of key hits. We had some errors that cost us a few runs. But stepping up and getting key hits was the big reason we won,” Vikings coach John Patterson said.

The Vikings went up 1-0 in the first inning when Robbie Powell singled, Cody Bland reached on an error, and two wild pitches.

East took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Vikings came back with three runs in the bottom half.

Powell doubled, Jeremy Hatfield walked and Kyle Meadows singled to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Powell and then Ethan Wilson and Kirt Shipley followed with RBI singles.

In the fourth, Powell was safe on an error, moved up on a passed ball, took third on a fly ball and came home on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.

East scored twice in the fifth only to have the Vikings answer with one.

Bland walked, went to second and third on wild pitches, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Wilson.

Each team scored four times in the sixth inning.

After East went up 8-6 in the top of the inning, the Vikings began getting some more big hits.

Bland was safe on an error and Meadows singled. Wilson, Shipley, Bowling and Chris Tibbs all followed with run-scoring singles.

Shipley had a nice running catch in the top of the seventh inning with two runners on and two outs to preserve the win.

Symmes Valley (3-3, 2-0) visits St. Joseph Tuesday.
