PEDRO — Getting board got the Fairland Dragons what they wanted.

Winning the rebounding battle enabled the Dragons to edge the Rock Hill Redmen 58-55 Monday and win their first Ohio Valley Conference title since 1995.

Fairland outrebounded the Redmen 32-22 with Dustin Bumgardner pulling down 14 rebounds. Michael Lamb and Cole Hatfield grabbed 6 each. Andrew Stumbo had 11 rebounds and Nathan Davenport 6 for Rock Hill.

“We knew Bumgardner going against Stumbo would be huge. We said the team who won the battle on the boards would win the game and, by our count, we won the battle of the boards,” Fairland coach Chad Belville said.

Fairland’s championship ended Chesapeake’s string of 11 straight championships. Rock Hill came into the game needing a win to get a share of the league lead.

“We had a lot of people contribute. This group of kids is something special. They just find a way to get something done. Every time you think they’re down for the count they make a play. They just reached down deep,” Belville said.

“Matt Bloomfield played a great game defensively. Everyone did something. It was a team effort. You can go up and down the ladder, and whenever we needed a play, someone made something happen.”

Trailing 55-53 with time running out, Hatfield hit Lamb inside and he scored and was fouled. Lamb converted 3-point play with 14 seconds.

Rock Hill was then guilty of a turnover and the Redmen quickly fouled Jacob Lucas on the inbounds play. Lucas converted both free throws to make it 58-55 with nine seconds left. Nathan Davenport’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer just missed.

“Their execution down the stretch was flawless. You’ve got to give them credit. They made the plays,” Redmen coach Adam Simpson said. “And Chad has done a great job of coaching.”

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Redmen who are now 12-6.

“I give our kids a lot of credit. We started 2-5 and won 10 in a row to have a chance at the league championship. We had some leads but we didn’t make our free throws,” Simpson said.

The game was tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter as Lamb and Bumgardner combined for 11 points while Davenport and Stumbo had a total of 12 points between them.

“(Rock Hill) did a tremendous job handling our press,” Belville said.

The game remained tied at the half at 28-28. Mike Ison and Stumbo helped Rock Hill take a 39-32 lead early in the third quarter before a 3-pointer by Lucas got Fairland within 39-35.

Hatfield hit three trifectas in the quarter as Fairland went on a 14-6 run and took a 49-45 lead at the end of the quarter.

That set up the thrilling finish.

Hatfield and Lamb scored 14 points each, Lucas 13 and Bumgardner 11 for the Dragons (12-5, 8-1).

Rock Hill 12-6, 6-3) was led by Stumbo with 17 points. Ison scored 12 and Davenport 10.
