“We played well. We played great. We were just missing 2- and 3-foot shots that normally fall. It was just one of those nights. We did everything but win the game,” Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said.

St. Joseph was able to stay in the game by limiting Rebels leading scorer Dustin McCombs to 12 points and South Gallia to 16 of 55 shooting.

“It was one of our better performances defensively. We shut McCombs down and held them to 49 points, so we played well. We just couldn’t finish on the offensive end,” Hacker said.

Michael Basedow had 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals to lead the Flyers (8-7). Ryan Staton scored 16 points and Clay Crum grabbed 9 rebounds.

South Gallia (14-2) also got 10 points from Derrick Beaver and Tyler Duncan with 10 points each.

The Rebels led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Basedow had 7 points in the second quarter including back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 23-23. Steven Call’s basket with 13 seconds left in the half put South Gallia up 25-23.

Basedow’s 3-pointer at the 2:57 mark got the Flyers within 31-30 to end the third quarter.

A layup by Staton gave the Flyers a 32-31 lead to begin the fourth quarter. The Rebels went on a 11-0 run to lead 42-32 with 4:45 left when Cum scored at the 4:20 mark to halt the scoring spree.

Basedow had two jumpers to cut the deficit to 43-38 with 2:03 left, but the Rebels made four foul shots and it was 47-38 with 38 seconds on the clock.

Chad Harvey hit a layup only to hve Travis McCarty sink a pair of foul shots to give the Rebels a 49-41 lead. Laber made a layup with 11 seconds left but the Flyers could get no closer.
