Venturing into the unknown proved to be a good trip for the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers.

Ironton got some much-needed performances as they pulled off a surprise win in their own invitational track meet Thursday.

“I thought we had a chance but things had to go right for us,” said Ironton coach Tim Thomas.

“We got some performances that we expected, but we got some other girls who really stepped up and gave us some points we didn’t expect. I was proud of our young kids because we’re not a real deep team.”

Mandi Boykin did what everyone expected as she won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She tied the meet record in the 100 (12.4 seconds) and later set a new mark in the 200 (25.7).

Rachel Walker took first place in the discus (99-11) as expected, but also finished fourth in the high jump, an event she has never attempted since junior high.

The 4×100 relay team of Cinnamon Fletcher, Michelle Pancake, Krista Markel and Boykin was first as expected and Pancake placed in the long jump.

But the unexpected came when Fletcher finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and Lorna Ceasar was fifth in the long jump. Ironton also got second- and third-place finishes from twin sisters Carie and Cortney Rister in the 400 meter dash, and Carmyn Whit was third in the 300 hurdles.

Ironton’s 4×400 relay team of Haley Hasenauer, Ceasar and the Risters took first place.

South Point’s Tara Lee won the long jump and the high jump while also finishing second to Boykin in the 100. Tinesha Taylor won the shot put.

Coal Grove’s Nikki Brammer won the pole vault with a meet record 7-6.
