SOUTH POINT

— Once the Rock Hill Redmen realized they could score, they didn’t know how to stop.

Missing playmaker Matt Matney with an illness, Rock Hill struggled to score 40 points in regulation. But the Redmen had 31 points in two extra four-minute quarters in a 71-62 win over the South Point Pointers Friday in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.

“It took us a while to adjust to not having Matney who does a good job creating. Once we realized we could create, the light went on that we can do things a little different, our offense just took off,” Simpson said.

“It just took us three and one-half quarters to realize it.”

With the win, Rock Hill (7-5, 4-2) moved to within one game of first place in the OVC. South Point (10-3, 5-1) is now tied for first place with Fairland.

Chris Brown drained three 3-pointers and Chase McWhorter scored 6 points in the first quarter as South Point raced to a 23-8 lead. Andrew Stumbo got 6 points for the Redmen.

The scoring slowed in the second quarter as Rock Hill got within 23-15 at the break.

Brown had 5 more points in the third quarter and the lead was 35-25.

Trailing by as many as 14 points, the Redmen rallied in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Pointers 15-5 in the fourth quarter as Aaron Butler and Stumbo scored 5 points each.

Brown had all 5 of South Point’s points in the quarter and it was 40-40 at the end of regulation.

“We had no consistency at all. We got up in regulation and didn’t take care of the ball and they tied game out. We didn’t do a very good job defensively the second half,” said Pointers coach Gary Norris.

Butler hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to tie the game at 52-52 and force a second overtime.

Rock Hill then outscored the Pointers 19-10 to get the win.

“That was a huge win for us. We just didn’t quit and found a way to win it,” Simpson said.

Stumbo scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead four Redmen in double figures. Mike Ison scored 17, Nathan Davenport had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Buter got 11 points.

Brown scored 25 points as he nailed seven 3-pointers. Chase McWhorter had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Beau Weed and Joey Stevens had 4 rebounds each and Zach Woody got 3 steals.
